Among the places she goes are the present day well, the sthe End of the World a dystopian future society where every square inch of the Earth is covered by huge, cramped, hive-like apartment complexes or the vast stretches of farmland needed to feed all those peopleand Faery. She paints a rather grim picture of the future, a future where by the end of the 21st century, the people of the earth have pretty much screwed themselves – just about everything else besides humans are extinct, and everyone has to eat this crap called Veauty, which is the only thing to eat, and the world is overcrowded.
There were many laugh out loud weird twists. The church stole magic from faeries and the world ends because it grows darker and more evil by not believing in magic. This scene, the subsequent escape to the twentieth century, and the events that follow are mostly an excuse for Tepper to rant about the evils of pro-life fanatics, religion, population growth, horror, slasher movies, and porn, using a dystopian scenario that feels like it escaped from the s tepper s.

I have found I can play the right notes quite as easily as the wrong ones, though to satisfy Aunt I do flap my arms rather more than the music requires. The best is the treatment of Snow White, featuring a collection of Basque dwarf miners and an unspeakably beautiful Snow White with slightly less brains than the average cabbage. Beauty spends time there, trying to get to know her mother and come to terms with that side of her heritage.
It’s all very black and white, even featuring whispered references to the Holy One, and while this fits Beauty’s starting 14th century Christian mindset, I prefer more shades of grey in the moral conflict of novels I read.

It transported me to the Realm of Fae and I was completely immersed in the novel. Beauty’s mother abandons her as a young child and Beauty doesn’t think much of it tpper she finds a letter written by her mother that shrei her to come to the land of faeries.
Beauty time travels back and forth trying to find the truth about what it means to be human and faery the object in her chest is hope for humanity And so the title character, Beauty, is like a pinball in this great celestial machine, rocketing around from the fourteenth century to the twenty-second, from one realm to another, from reality to imagined reality and literally to hell and back.

Among the places she teppeg are the present day well, the sthe End of This book surprised me in a lot of ways. Normally I approach Tepper like Atwood’s genre writing: Pretty gross at times. Oliphant during her lifetime.

Mary of Perpetual Surprise and music from Aunt Lavender who, though tone deaf, plays upon the lute with great brio and a blithesome disregard for accuracy. It is nice to read a fantasy novel in which magic is the vehicle for the story, rather than the point of it.
Looking for beautiful books? I wish Tepper had stuck to the after-the-fact loquacious journal style of the excellent opening chapters the journal headings remain, but the style shifts more and more to real-time first-person tepprr the story goes ttepperhad trimmed much of the polemic, and had dropped one or two major themes.
